DAVNOR FISHERFOLKS TRAIN HANDS ON VALUE-ADDING LOCAL PRODUCE

by: PENRO ADVOCACY TEAM

Heroben Hometel, Tagum City - The Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (PENRO), in tandem with the Provincial Science and Technology (DOST) engaged fisherfolks from Tagum and Panabo in a 1-day livelihood training last August 30, 2019.

The activity entitled, "Empowering Coastal Fishing Communities for Livelihood Security" aims to stregnthen the resilience of fisherfolks whose basic livelihood of fishing is being threatened by intensifying pressure on fish stocks due to population increase, and climate change.

The Cabugan Fisherfolk Association from Sitio Cabugan, Brgy. Busaon, Tagum City and the JP Laurel Mangrove Growers Association of Brgy. JP Laurel, Panabo City enjoyed processing Banana Catsup, Banana Chips, Spicy Dilis, Calamansi Juice Drink Concentrate and Homemade Durian Jam-making. Ms. Cheri May Tila and Ms. Helix Anne Cabatuan from DOST 11 shared their expertise in the process.

"Adding value to raw materials that are locally available in the community is not only a means to potentially increase fisherfolks' income. This product diversification is also a strategy to increase resilience amidst the warming sea and declining fish catch", said the workshop facilitators.

The activity is part of PENRO's Integrated Coastal Resource Management (ICRM) that supports Kuya Gov's desire to attain environmental sustainability.
