Sagayen National High School, Asuncion - The Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (PENRO), in partnership with the Department of Education (DepEd) through Youth for Environment in Schools Organization (YES-O) organized an environmental confab dubbed Eco-talk: a moment with Mother Nature on October 10, 2019 at Sagayen National High School, Asuncion.
The confab gathered 100 students from Grade 7 to Senior High. PENRO technical staff shared environmental inputs and facilitated environmental advocacy activities. Mr. Vinrad C. Abangin discussed climate change and local initiatives, while For. Angie P. Coriba discussed. solid waste management.
The lectures and open forum highlighted the need to adapt to the "new normal" characterized by increasing temperature, the intensifying rainfall and the disasters that these conditions will bring to local communities.
In response, the "eco-warriors" expressed their passion in championing the message of Mother Nature. To effectively disseminate what they learned, they picked up key messages from the lectures and convert them to "hugot lines". This way, environmental advocacies speak the language of the youth.
"Ang pag-ibig parang kalikasan: ito ay nawawala kapag binabalewala" says one participant.
"Ang love parang climate change. Kapag nanlalamig na sya, ibig sabihin may pinag-iinitan ng iba." says another.
PENRO and YES-O organizers are hoping that by translating jargons in Climate Change and other advocacy areas to popular "language" the youth speak and understand will create more constituency from among their peers. Participants also pledged to disseminate the pop message through social media.
The YES-O is a DepEd-recognized co-curricular school organization campaigning for conserving, protecting and safeguarding the environment.
